Arugam Bay is undeniably a surfing hotspot in Sri Lanka, with its renowned wave at Main Point earning it a spot among the top 10 surfing destinations worldwide. It’s no wonder that Arugam Bay plays host to international surf competitions.
Why do surfers flock to Arugam Bay?
Well, one of the main draws is the sheer variety and accessibility of surf spots. With around 10 spots within a 30-minute tuk-tuk ride, even a longer surfing holiday stays fresh and exciting. Pros can test their skills at Main Point’s challenging reef break, while intermediates can explore the diverse beaches and breaks, each with its own unique character. And beginners? They’ll find plenty of opportunities to try themselves out, though things can get a bit crowded at popular spots during peak months.

What about timing your trip?
The surfing season on the East Coast runs from April to October, with peak tourist months in July and August. While the waves are at their best during this time, be prepared for crowded lineups. For a quieter surf experience, consider visiting in April-June or late August-October. Normally, November is still quite good, with more waves for yourself, as you will avoid the crowds.
But here’s the kicker: Sri Lanka’s surf scene isn’t limited to just one coast or one season. From November to April, the South Coast offers its own array of surf spots, making Sri Lanka a year-round surfing destination like no other.
