Sending you some ☀️ Come back from your Sending you some ☀️

Come back from your morning surf, have a shower in our garden and relax in the pool.
Or have a good first coffee at our restaurant, to then head over to the pool.
Have you been at the beach to watch the sunrise?
Maybe you've been practicing yoga, and now you refresh yourself at the pool while your breakfast is being prepared.

So many options, ideas, day dreams. What's yours today?

⠀
Our next stop in exploring the mountain area of Sri Lanka was Haputale. For us, Haputale is a beautiful insider tip. Everyone goes to Ella. Ella is overcrowded, it has so many hotels, and the main road has lost its charm of a cute little mountain village quite some time ago.⠀
Haputale, instead, is one of the places where it's not easy to find a place to eat. Recently, some new spots came up (for example the @mintofthemist, check out our story highlight 'traveling SL'). Instead, it is very common to eat breakfast and dinner at your homestay or guesthouse. And this is normally a great choice!⠀
⠀
Most famous in Haputale is the Lipton's Seat. Lipton's Seat is actually one of the spots in Sri Lanka Angie visited the most (except for Kumana National Park close to Arugam Bay).⠀
It's the peak of the Lipton Tea Plantation (yes, the Lipton Ice Tea!) that comes with a stunning view, highly recommended for sunrise. First, enjoy the view, then grab a cup of tea and some homemade coconut rottis with spicy sambol. So good! ⠀
The tea factory on the way up to the top is ok, though there are better ones to get insights into tea production.⠀
⠀
This time, we stayed at a little guesthouse called Nilowin holiday resort (@nilowinholidayresort). It's close to the Adisham Bungalow, a monastery built by the Benedictine monks a long time ago. Most accommodations in Haputale are a bit off the tracks. ⠀
⠀
We enjoyed their hospitality, and especially the good homemade food (thanks to the Mom of the family!).⠀

In August 2020, when it got quiet in Arugam Bay, we started to explore Sri Lanka on our own. Here, we share some of our highlights.
Stay with us. Hopefully soon. Have you hear Stay with us. Hopefully soon.

Have you heard that the international airports in Sri Lanka will be reopened on the 21st of January? Following strict health guidelines, tourists have to stay in selected and certified hotels for the first 14 days. After that, they can travel freely. The selected and certified hotels are currently mainly 5 stars and premium hotels. During the first 14 days, traveling in groups to specific sightseeing spots is possible. Don't ask us about prices for the first 14 days - we don't know how much the hotels charge.

After these 14 days, you can discover the island on your own. For example Arugam Bay: Stay with us at Stay Golden!

Things change quickly at the moment. We assume it's a testing phase to get people back into the country. With time, the guidelines and traveling restrictions will change, too. If you don't have so much time (and probably money for the first 14 days), just wait a bit longer. 🤞🏽

After the impressive experience at the Diyaluma Waterfalls, we checked in at the Melheim Resort in Beragala close to Haputale. Part of their service is a walk to their waterfall. Crossing their garden with giant trees like this, we reached a viewpoint. From there, we walked into the forest until we got to the waterfall. We enjoyed the time in nature, and after the little hike, jumping into the pool was the best to cool down.⠀
⠀
Definitely a good place for everyone who likes nature, wants to recharge without too much distraction, and is looking for a specific standard. They offer many other activities like a birdwatching tour. At the time of our stay, it was included.⠀

During all our travels in 2020, we were almost alone on many touristic spots. With the airport being closed and a lack of tourists, almost all hotels had special offers, especially the big/ and premium ones.⠀

Adopt don't shop 🐾⠀ ⠀ It was a very i Adopt don't shop 🐾⠀
⠀
It was a very interesting and challenging process for Angie and Rihan to find a common understanding of pets.⠀
⠀
In Angie's (Western) culture, it was normal to have pets. These pets live in your house or apartment, often even share your bed. For many, they are like a family member. You buy food that was only produced for the pets. And then there is farming, where the 'production' of meat is professionalized. An average person normally does not get in contact with the whole process, only with the result at the supermarket. ⠀
⠀
In Rihan's (Sri Lankan) culture, it was super rare to have a pet. There are domestic animals like chicken, yes. Dogs live in a specific area, normally covering 1-2 properties. Cats are very rare, as they face too many challenges surviving. Some families have birds like parrots or lovebirds in normally small cages without letting them out. Instead, it's very common to see cows, buffaloes, and goats walking around in streets and neighborhoods, a way of farming here.⠀
⠀
When Angie moved to Rihan, there were 3 dogs at Stay Golden, being fed with leftovers. It was normal for Rihan and the team to not touch the dogs or interact too much with them.⠀
⠀
You won't imagine the never-ending fights and discussions we had about how to treat and handle the dogs. In the end, with a lot of understanding and time, we managed to find a common approach. ⠀
⠀
Angie is nowadays critical about the breeding of pets and does not support any kind of farming that is set up in factories or on large scales. ⠀
Rihan loves his dogs, plays with them, and takes good care of them. They live outside, are free, can go wherever they want, and are being fed regularly.⠀
We kinda met in the middle.⠀
What's very important for us is that we also help out dogs that live in our area. 3 of our dogs (Bruno, Grosh, and Ben) have been with us for over 4 years now. Leyla and Rena both lived in the neighborhood and were adopted last year.⠀
⠀
Our three cats are all rescues. In the pictures, you see Leo and Ronja. Both joined us in 2020. Jack has lived with us for 2 years.⠀
⠀
If you want a pet, please consider adopting it. You'll rescue a life.

⠀
Our goal was to spend some time in the mountains. The first stop was the Diyaluma Falls, around 120 km from Stay Golden / Arugam Bay. We've driven by the Falls many times already before, but have never been up to the top. You can drive halfway up, and then start walking. It was not too difficult and didn't take long. We recommend taking a local guide to show you the way and to explain about the specific plants and trees around. Don't forget your swimwear: there are many ponds to swim in and jump into, even before the rainy season. In the rainy season, though, be more cautious, as the water levels rise immensely and the water gains power. ⠀
